Put Your Trust In The Lord

This election season has been remarkable in so many ways.  We have been inundated with phone calls, text messages, emails, and television commercials from the candidates.  The campaign rhetoric has set us all on edge and pitted us against one another in distrust and division.  Amidst all of the cacophony we desire to find someone we can trust and who can provide us with the security and rest we need.  When faced with enemies who attacked him and lied on him in an effort to overthrow him, David found safety and salvation in the fortress and unfailing love of God.  He trusted in God alone to protect him, give him rest and righteously judge his enemies.  I pray that we would each find the rest, protection and salvation in the Lord that we need right now.  Amen

Truly my soul finds rest in God; my salvation comes from him. Truly he is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will never be shaken. How long will you assault me? Would all of you throw me down— this leaning wall, this tottering fence? Surely they intend to topple me from my lofty place; they take delight in lies. With their mouths they bless, but in their hearts they curse.  (Psalm 62:1-4)

David began this Psalm affirming that in God, his fortress and his salvation, was he able to find rest.  His trust in God was unshakable because God was his “rock”.  Because God was his fortress (protection), David questioned why his enemies continued to try to attack him.  How long would they try to attack him, attempt to overthrow him and lie on him, knowing that God protected him?   He could see their attacks despite their deception, because although these people appeared supportive in his face, he saw that they cursed him in their hearts.

Yes, my soul, find rest in God; my hope comes from him. Truly he is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will not be shaken. My salvation and my honor depend on God; he is my mighty rock, my refuge. Trust in him at all times, you people; pour out your hearts to him, for God is our refuge. (Psalm 62:5-8)

David returns to his opening thought that in God he finds rest and hope. Rest because God is his rock, his fortress and his refuge.  When we stand on Him, we can not be shaken.  We find safety and salvation when we seek refuge in Him.  And as a fortress, He shelters us and protects us from the enemy.  So in all these ways, we can put our hope and trust in God, and in Him we can find rest for our weary souls!

Surely the lowborn are but a breath, the highborn are but a lie. If weighed on a balance, they are nothing; together they are only a breath. Do not trust in extortion or put vain hope in stolen goods; though your riches increase, do not set your heart on them. One thing God has spoken, two things I have heard: “Power belongs to you, God, and with you, Lord, is unfailing love”; and, “You reward everyone according to what they have done.” (Psalm 62:9-12)

David urged us not to put our hope and faith in other people or in things. They do not last, and they have no power to oppose God.  David put his trust in God whose power is a fortress that protects us and whose unfailing love saves us, and gives us the rest we need as we sojourn in this world.  Then, as a final reminder to everyone, David declared that God will judge everyone and each person will receive His judgement according to what they have done.

Despite the enemies that sought to overthrow him with attacks and lies, king David found refuge and safety in God, who is a mighty fortress.  God is the rock of our salvation in whom we can put our trust and hope and not be shaken.  David found rest for his soul in a loving and mighty God.  We don’t have to live being anxious about what others may be trying to do to us or around us.  We don’t need to put our hope in other people or the riches and things of this world.  Our God has all power and in his unfailing love toward us.  When we trust in Him, He provides us with the security and protection we need…. so we can find rest and salvation for our weary souls.

Blessings, Rev. Glenn
