When You Wait On The Lord

“You must not know who I am…, you better ask somebody”.   This is a refrain used by those who want you to believe that they have more power than you.  It is intended to be an intimidating warning for you to back off or be crushed.  In Isaiah 40:12-13; 25-31, God speaks to Israel to remind them of His power and His ability to keep them and strengthen them even in captivity. He had not lost any of His power, He was greater than their captors and He knew their situation and would deliver them.  He was still the Almighty and He would renew their strength and hope to endure.  I pray that you will never forget Gods power over your circumstance, and that you would look to Him to renew your strength.  Amen

Who has measured the waters in the hollow of his hand, or with the breadth of his hand marked off the heavens? Who has held the dust of the earth in a basket, or weighed the mountains on the scales and the hills in a balance? Who can fathom the Spirit of the LORD, or instruct the LORD as his counselor? (Isaiah 40:12-13) Isaiah wrote to those who were in captivity and doubting the power of God.  He reminded them of who God is and how big God is. He is able to hold and measure all the waters of the world in His hand!  God’s wisdom and knowledge (omniscience) is incomprehensible to us, so who is it that is able to provide counsel to Him.  Sometimes we need to be reminded of just who God is and of His awesome presence, power, wisdom and knowledge to direct any situation we encounter against any forces and powers in this world.  The northern kingdom had been taken into captivity by the Assyrians and Judah had been taken captive by the Babylonians, but God was still in control and those nations were no match for His power!

“To whom will you compare me? Or who is my equal?” says the Holy One. Lift up your eyes and look to the heavens: Who created all these? He who brings out the starry host one by one and calls forth each of them by name. Because of his great power and mighty strength, not one of them is missing. Why do you complain, Jacob?

Why do you say, Israel, “My way is hidden from the LORD; my cause is disregarded by my God”? Do you not know? Have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom.  (Isaiah 40:25-28) Through Isaiah, God challenged His people in their captivity to recognize that the power of the nations that took them captive wasn’t anywhere near His power. The stars that the Babylonians consulted were not only created by God, but He numbered them all and knew every one of them by name.  God asks Israel why, if He had that kind of power and had never misplaced anything in the heavens, would they think that He had forgotten about them.  And why would they think that He wouldn’t see and know all that they were going through in captivity.  God had not lost His power or grown tired so that He needed to rest, nor was He deficient in understanding their plight.  No, God reminded them that He is everlasting!

He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint. (Isaiah 40:29-31) God in His everlasting and indefatigable power was able to renew the strength of his people.  We, unlike God, do grow weary and tired, exhausted to the point where even the strongest among us are subject to stumble and fall.  But if we put our faith and hope in God, He has the power to renew our strength to enable us to go on.   We can soar in the heavens, we can run the race that has been set out for us here on earth and we can go on in our daily lives walking with God’s Spirit that strengthens us and keeps us from giving up.

What is it that you are going through?  Have you wondered if God has forgotten about you?  God reminds us through Isaiah that He still has all power, He knows what we are going through and He has not forgotten about us.  In due time, He will deliver us.  He is our hope, and when we look to Him in faith, He has the power to renew our strength so that we can soar over our circumstances., we can continue running the race that we have been given, and we can keep walking with the Holy Spirit so that we don’t give up.   All that and more is what happens when you put your trust and faith in Him…. And you wait on the Lord!

Blessings, Rev  Glenn
